Today, we're going to learn how to summarize quantitative data by creating a histogram. Histogram is one of the most popular graphs that data analysts and researchersuse for visualizing quantitative data (i.e., product sales, child height, average temperature, etc.). Thus, it's important to learn how to create it and how to interpret it.

Histogram - is a graphical summary for quantitative data previously summarized in either a frequency, relative frequency, or percent frequency distribution. Histogram does not only summarize the data but it also gives the shape of the data --- allowing us to check for skewness in the distribution of data.

Now suppose, we want to examine the distribution of students' ages in the Statistics class. We want to know whether the distribution of ages is fairly close to normal (or bell-shaped curve). We also want to know how many students are below age 35.

In the video below, I'll show how to construct a histogram of the Students' Ages in the Statistics class (column c in StatisticsClass_data). Follow along and please refer to pages 3-4 of Section 2 – Handout. In the future, I'll teach you how to create histogram in Excel, Python or R. But by learning how to do it by hand first, you'll better understand and appreciate the use of histogram.

Steps in Creating Histogram

1. Determine the number of non-overlapping intervals/bins/classes that will be formed from the data.

• Bins or intervals are specified ranges that will be used to group the data. As a general guideline, we recommend using between 5 and 20 classes. Let's use 5 bins or intervals, for this example.

2. Determine the width of each bin/class (always round up).

3. Specify the interval/bin/class limits.

• Class limits must be chosen so that each data item belongs to one and only one bin/class.
• The lower class limit identifies the smallest possible data value assigned to the class. The upper class limit identifies the largest possible data value assigned to the class.

4. Count the frequency in each interval/bin.

5. Draw the histogram based on frequency distribution. Remember, the frequency is always along the y-axis while the variable of interest (say, age) is along the x-axis.

*As you may have noticed, we first had to create the frequency distribution (it could also be relative frequency distribution or percent frequency distribution) before we are able to draw the histogram.

Once you understand how to create histogram by hand, you may let other software do it for you (I would use either Excel, Python or R). This is the histogram I got, which should be similar to your hand-drawn histogram if you used # of bins = 5 and width/ interval size = 6.
