From slight pitch correction to some cool robotic sounds, pitchcorrection software can be extremely useful.
T-Pain made this effect very popular, but it’s also beenused by a lot of other artists such as Daft Punk, the Black Eyed Peas, andmore.
Auto-Tune can be used to achieve a lot of different effectsand you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on the Pro version of theSoftware since there are a lot of free ones available.
In this post I’ll go over the best free pitch correction plugins available for Windows, Mac and even Linux.
Now, out of all the plugins on this list, I think that the best ones are these five;

1. GSnap – (Windows)
GSnap gives you the ability to control the notes that it snaps to through MIDI.
This means that if you need to correct a singer’s performance through pitch correction you can play the notes on a MIDI keyboard and feed these notes into the plugin, and GSnap will now use those notes as a guide and will correct the pitch to whatever notes are in the MIDI file.
This will also prevent unwanted snapping to other notes.
If you don’t want to control the plugin through MIDI, then you can set any scale you’d like or control it by turning certain notes on or off.
The interfaceis fairly easy to use and understand:
On the left you can see the original notes and the ones it’s snapping to, which will not only give you a visual representation of what’s going on, but also allow you to fine tune everything more easily.
It has a 12-knob control system which is divided in thefollowing way;
- Detection: Min Freq, Max Freq, Gate, and Speed knobs.
- Correction: Threshold, Amount, Attack, and Release knobs.
- MIDI: Pitch bend, Vibrato, Vib Speed, and Calibrate knobs.
All of these knobs let you edit everything with precision and accuracy.
It also features a gate that gives you the ability to select on what parts the plugin actually affects the sound, like for example; If you only want to affect the louder parts, or more importantly, if you don’t want the plugin to trigger on any unwanted noises that might be part of the track and just the vocals.

2. Graillon2 – (Win/Mac)
The first thing you will notice when looking at Graillon2 is the way its interface is designed;
It has this vintage vibe to it which is just fantastic to look at, plus it is designed in such a way that makes it easy for you to navigate through the settings.
It is a very visual plugin since it has a display where youcan see the notes that are being played as well as where Grallion2 issnapping/correcting them to.
This plugin is specifically designed for vocals and thepitch shifting can be smoothly adjusted from minus 12 to plus 12 semitones.
One cool feature is the “preserve formants” knob which, intheory, helps you preserve the tone and characteristics of the vocal trackwhile shifting the pitch.
In some cases, this ends up creating some issues, so makesure to play around with these settings to see what happens.
The speed knob is also pretty useful since it helps the notes “stick” a little longer, reducing the pitch correction jumps.
Grallion2 also allows you to choose how fast or slow the snapping occurs, which is done by adjusting the “smooth” knob.
By adjusting the controls on the “bitcrusher” section, you should be able to achieve some interesting growl sounds.
The typical controls such as dry/wet, low-cut and outputlevel adjustment are also included.
Lastly, the Pitch Correction module can be drivenby MIDI, just like with GSnap.
If you like the vintage look on this plugin and you need agood all-rounder, then Graillon2 may be the one for you.
There is one important note though: It’s notcompletely free but rather “freemium”.
Basically, you won’t get its full functionality unless youbuy it.
With the free edition you only get the “pitch shifting” and“pitch correction” features.

3. MAutoPitch – (Win/Mac)
Melda Productions is a renowned audio plugin company that created other free plugins such as the MRing Modulator, the MFlanger, MTremolo, and more.
You can find all these plugins in another post I wrote about the best Free Modulation Plugins, should you be interested.
Even Deadmau5, who is a very famous electronic musician, uses these plugins, which is a clear testament to their quality.
MAutoPitch comes with the typical pitch correction features such as depth, detune and speed.
However, it also includes some additional controls such as a dry/wet knob, a width knob which will allow you to control the stereo spread, and the keep- and shift-formants knobs.
How does Formant Shifting affect the sound?
Formant Shifting allows you to make the sound deeper or higher, or in other words, “more masculine or feminine”.
However, keep in mind that this can alter the pitch if yougo too far.
Additionally, MAutoPitch allows you to choose between different scales such as; Chromatic, major, minor, and pentatonic, and this lets you setup the pitch-correction in no time, or at least use it as a jumping-off point.
It also provides you with a visual display of what notes arebeing detected by the plugin.
Even though it does have some amazing features and isdefinitely worth using, there are some cons to it:
First of all, the free version comes with a banner on the bottom that is a bit annoying to look at.
Also, the pitch correction isn’t the best overall since there’s some unintentional snapping to unwanted notes occurring at times, even after you set the notes and the scales perfectly and all the settings are in place.
Lastly, MAutoPitch also includes a limiter, which should help you keep your sound from clipping.
All in all, it’s a great free plugin that could make a great addition to your arsenal!

4. KeroVee – (Windows)
KeroVee was created back in 2010 by the Japanese company“g200kg”.
The whole point behind this software was to create a precise vocal pitch adjustment plugin without focusing too much on the other effects that can be achieved; like a robotic sound.
This is why KeroVee is an excellent alternative for anyonewho just wants to apply some subtle and precise adjustments to their vocaltracks.
Similar to Gsnap and Graillon2, you have the option to routethe MIDI notes to KeroVee.
This will allow the plugin to use these notes as a guide to properly snap the notes from the singer’s performance to where they should be.
Using MIDI to guide the plugin is great, however this might take some time to set up, and this is why KeroVee also allows you to select the notes you want it to correct to-, or not, through a simple clickable interface;
Enable the ones you want it to snap to or disable the ones you don’t want it to snap to, and that’s it!
KeroVee shares a lot of parameters with most other autotune plugins, however there is one that’s unique to it which is the “nuance” control;
The “nuance” knob lets you select whether ornot to keep the vibrato of the original sound, making the vocals sound morenatural while still being autotuned.
Note: If set to max, even the smallest vibrato willtrigger the correction, resulting in a mechanical sound.
There are loads of other typical controls and features available with this plugin like Tunespeed, formant shifting, panning, volume, etc.
Like I mentioned earlier, KeroVee is excellent for fine tuning the vocal track and doesn’t really emphasize too much on achieving robotic sounds.

5. X42 Auto-Tune – (Win/Mac/Linux)
X42 Auto-Tune is intended to correct the pitch of a voice singing slightly out of tune.
It works by resampling and looping the signal and does not include formant correction, which means that it should be used to correct small errors only and not really to transpose a song or to correct big mistakes.
Even though it is a very simple pitch-correction plugin, itactually does a decent job at what it’s supposed to do.
The interface is very easy to navigate, it can be controlled via MIDI, or you can input a fixed number of notes in any key and the plugin will correct to the notes on that key.
It comes with a “Bias” knob that controls how long the original note lasts before it corrects it to either the ones you selected from the scale or the ones input through MIDI.
This allows it to go off-tune a little making the performance feel more realistic and natural.
Similar to the “Bias” control you also have the option to use the “Offset” feature that gives you the option to adjust how far from the note the singer is allowed to go before it gets corrected.
Both of these parameters are designed to keep the vocalrecording sounding more human and natural.

6. Auto-Tune Evo – (Windows)
Auto-Tune Evo by Antares Audio Technology has been released in February of 2018 and has been rising in popularity ever since then.
It’s got a great set of features such as pitch correction inreal time, for live performances, vibrato controls and Humanize.
Auto-Tune Evo was created, like most auto tune plugins, with vocals in mind; However, it can also be used with most monophonic instruments as well; e.g. bass.
It has two basic modes; Automatic and Graphical.
With the Automatic Mode you give Auto-Tune some basic information about the track and that’s it, it will do the rest or its own.
With the Graphical Mode you can go through the entiretrack manually and tell Auto-Tune exactly where it needs to apply somecorrection and how much.
While using the Graphical Mode might be a lot more work and definitely not for everyone, in my experience I’ve found that you get a much more transparent and realistic sound, and the common artifacts associated with tuning tend to be less noticeable.
Automatic Mode is excellent if you’re going for that T-Painstyle of sound, or if you just want to quickly adjust a track.
It really comes down to what sound you’re going for and how much time and energy you’re willing to invest into it.
Regardless of what mode you’re going to be using, the first thing you’ll need to do is set up the “Input Type”, like Soprano, Alto/Tenor, Low Male, Instrument and Bass Instrument.
Another feature is the Key and scaleselection where you can tell Auto-Tune the precise key of the song.
Lastly, the Formants control will keep as much of the original characteristics of the vocals if switched on.
If you want a versatile and good-sounding plugin that is good for both beginners and advanced producers, then definitely give it a try.

7. AutoTalent – (Linux)
If you’re a Linux user, then this one’s definitely for you!
Autotalent is an open-source and real-time pitch correction plugin that allows users to specify the notes that the singer should be hitting, and then AutoTalent will do the rest.
Not only can it correct the pitch but it can also be used to create effects those T-Pain effects.
Now, don’t be fooled by the simple- and stripped-down look of the interface, since it’s actually a very capable plugin, and you can use it for some light pitch correction or to achieve a full robotic auto-tune.
It includes all of the typical parameters that other auto-tune plugins have, such as; Formant shifting, selecting a scale or notes for the plugin to use or to exclude, and more.
However, it provides one feature that most auto-tune plugins don’t; The Vibrato section.
This section can help you add some vibrato to the vocals to give it a more natural sound, and of course you can go overboard and use it as an effect.
All in all, Autotalent is an extremely useful and fully-featured auto-tune plugin, plus it’s for Linux users who don’t have that many alternatives when it comes to plugins and music production software.

8. Voloco – (Windows, Mac)
If you’re looking for an Auto-Tuner that is capable of slight- and in-depth correction, then Voloco might not be the right one for you.
It’s designed to be used as a creative tool, which is why you only get access to 6 presets that you can’t even edit, and that’s it.
Each of these presets affects the audio in a slightly different way. However, they are all optimized to achieve the “T-Pain” auto-tuned vocal effect.
Naturally, since it doesn’t feature any more controls than changing the presets, setting the Key and adjusting how much correction you want, Voloco is extremely easy to use.
The interface is extremely clean and easy to understand which, if you’re new to auto-tuners, is great news.
Voloco is a fun plugin to have, especially for coming up with new ideas, but it’s not the most in-depth auto-tuner.
Still, I find it easy to recommend to beginners!
Lastly, you can also download a mobile version for your phone that you can use to sing over other songs you have on your device and Voloco will adjust your performance to the song’s key.

9. BeatLab Autotuna (Ableton Only)
BeatLab Autotuna is only compatible with Ableton, which is a shame since it’s a great vocal processing tool, and it’s also the reason why I put it last on this list.
The original Autotuna was a lot harder to use since it made you select the notes that you wanted it to snap to as well as de-select the ones that you didn’t want it to snap to, or you were able to import a scale.
With the BeatLab version of Autotuna you can select different already built-in scales and patterns, how much or how hard it should be correcting the sound, and more.
Other features include: a dry/wet control, amount control & correction settings.
The only drawback to Autotuna, aside from only working on Ableton, is that it’s a fairly basic pitch correction tool that won’t let you do too much in-depth tweaking. If you require something more powerful, then Graillon2 would be a much better alternative.
BeatLab’s autotune comes as part of a free Max4Live pack, which features pitch & time machines that comes with a range of other plugins that you can use creatively for sound design.

10. Soundtrap (Online DAW; Browser only)
Sountrap is a free to use platform that works just like any regular DAW with a couple minor limitations, but this is to be expected since it’s browser based.
Soundtrap offers plenty recording and mixing features and of course, Auto-Tune is one of them (a very limited version).
You can choose how Heavy or Light the effect should be (Heavy sounds more robotic), and then you can select the notes Auto-Tune should snap to by clicking on them. Otherwise, all the major and minor scales can also be selected.
I have to say that the lighter settings do work quite well, but when I tried the “Heavy” one on my vocals, even though it sounded robotic and pretty usable, there were some annoying artifacts present.
How to use Sountrap’s Auto-Tune:
- Hover your mouse over the track you want to tune.
- Click on Edit and select Auto-Tune.
- Choose all the parameters and click on save.
After this it will process the track which will take a couple seconds and you will be able to hear how the effect sounds. If you don’t like it then click on cancel to further adjust it, and if you like it simply click on “Use it”.
Top 3 Free Autotune Plugins
Out of all the Auto-Tune plugins on this list I’d have tosay that Graillon2, GSnap and Auto-Tune Evo are my toprecommendations.
They offer a lot of features, they sound great, and they give you more control over the track itself than most other plugins.
Budget yet premium Alternatives
While the plugins I will list now aren’t free, they also won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
If you have some money to spend and want a higher quality pitch-correction tool, then these are my recommendations:
- Auto-Tune Access: The more affordable and stripped-down version of the famous Antares Auto-Tune.
- Melodyne 5 Essential: This is the most basic version of Melodyne, but it should be enough for most people.
- iZotope Nectar 3: While more advanced, it’s definitely one of the ebst alternatives.

Where Do I Find Plug-Ins?
First things first: If you want to get your hands on some solid VST’s, check out VSTforFree.com. It’s a great place for all kinds of plug-ins. Many of them aren’t compatible with Mac, however, there are still some great ones on there.
In this article, I’ll show you some of the more popular plug-ins to use in Garageband so more on that later.
One of the great thing about VST’s is that you can find them all over online. Many YouTubers show you what plug-ins they use, and where to find them, so finding a great plug-in is as simple as just going on YouTube or Google to find them.
Without further ado, this is how to download VST’s for Mac in GarageBand.
How To Install Plug-ins In Garageband
For this tutorial, I’m going to be using the DSK Dynamic Guitars Plugin which you find here at VST4Free.
On this page, you can see the different options for downloading the plugin. We want to use the Mac AU version.
1) Click on the Mac AU file and download the Zip File. I prefer to put it all on the desktop, that way it’s easy to find later when I want to drop it into the library.
It shouldn’t take longer than a couple of minutes for it to download.
2) After it’s finished downloading, you can open up the Zip File, and it’s going to show you the components for the plug-in. It looks like a little white lego block.
3) Now, go to your computer’s home-screen, then into the settings on the top left-hand side and click on where it says “Go.”
4) During this part, you have to hold the “Options” button on your keyboard so that it brings up “Library” in the drop-down menu. You have to hold the “Options” button, otherwise, it’ll disappear.
5) Go into your “Library,” and find the folder that says “Audio.”
6) Typically, it’ll bring up four different folders, “MIDI Drivers,” “Plug-Ins,” “Presets,” and “Sounds.”
7) Open up “Plug-ins.”
8) Open the file, “Components.”
9) If you’ve followed the instructions I’ve laid out, you’ll have the Dynamic Guitars Component sitting on your home screen, that way you can simply drag and drop the component into the “Components” file.
10) In most cases, getting access to this plug-in simply requires you to open up GarageBand and you’ll find your new plug-in in your Smart Control’s plug-in settings.
However, some people struggle with this part, because, for whatever reason, they have to turn their computer on and off in order for the plug-in to show up.
11) So turn your computer on and off just to be safe.
12) Now open up GarageBand.
13) Go into your Smart Controls and find the plug-ins in your options.
14) Open up the Available plug-ins.
15) It should say, “Dynamic Guitars,” and you just click on the “Stereo” option that it brings up afterward, and now you’ve successfully uploaded your new plug-in and it’s ready to use.
16) In some instances, you might have to adjust the octave, otherwise, the plug-in won’t work correctly depending on the VST.
However, with this particular plug-in, you won’t have that problem because it’s a guitar, and the designer of the VST made it so that you can play the guitar at many different octaves.
With my DrumPro plug-in that I always use, that isn’t the case, and it has to be at Octave 3, or “C3,” as GarageBand refers to it.
Why aren’t my Plug-ins showing up in GarageBand?
Like, I mentioned above, most people can’t find their plug-in in GarageBand because they haven’t turned their computer on and off. I’ve noticed that other tutorials forget to mention this.

Free Autotune For Garageband Ipad
You want to click on that, and then download the 5 different components listed in Google Drive. There’s a download button on the right-hand side of this page where you can download all of it.
After that, just follow the steps that I laid out above. Just as a quick refresher, you’ll have to unpack the downloaded ZIP file and then open up the file and drag and drop the individual “component” files into your library.
When I was having trouble, I turned my computer on and off, and then I had to reboot GarageBand in order for the LePou plug-ins to show up in the “Audio Units” file.
These are quite possibly some of the best Amplifier plug-ins that you can use in Garageband in my opinion. The Clean setting in the LePou plug-in is pretty great.
What Are The Best Plug-Ins for GarageBand?
Like I mentioned at the beginning of the article, there are a ton of free plug-ins on the internet that are a lot of fun to use. I’ve scoured the internet looking for the best VSTs, and I came up with this list.
As a side note, even though they’re paid plug-ins, I included Superior Drummer and Amplitube 4 because they have such a good reputation.
Superior Drummer, especially, is a great program for people interested in making rock and metal songs. However, I’m sure that hip-hop producers can put it to good use as well.
Additionally, for this list, I polled users online and asked them what some of their favorite VSTs are to use, so I can’t vouch for all of them personally.
Without going too far off topic, here’s the list (I provided links to where you can find each one):
This is a synth plug-in made by U-he and based off of the Roland Juno-60 which came out in 1982. It’s a classic. This plug-in has quite a bit more functionality, however, and it’s powered by Amazona.de. U-he has a reputation for imitating analog models well.
This is a collection of 28 plug-ins that are extremely popular with not only GarageBand users but for other DAW users as well. You can pay for the license for added functionality and other features, but from what I understand, most people just take the free version and are happy with that.
This package includes reverb, mixing and mastering tools, modulators, filters, compressors, flangers, phasers, tremolos, tuners, vibratos, limiters, loudness analyzers, notepads, oscillators, and shapers.
This plug-in is known for its “classic” stereo reverb which is very simple to use but sounds great. It also has a bunch of different presets that you can use.
LePou guitar amplifier simulators are pretty awesome. However, I actually like the clean version of the amps they give you, rather than the distorted channel.
It comes with five amplifiers: the Hybrit, Le456, LeCto, LeGion, and LeXtac. Each one is great for its own reason. I would say that my favorite, thus far, is the LeGion and the LeXtac.
- Crystal Synth
This is an old-school synthesizer plug-in that has been around for a long time and comes with all kinds of effects. The effects, honestly, sound pretty authentic for a free VST. Some users claim there are better plug-ins and there probably are, but this is great for what it is.
Made by TAL, the purpose of this plug-in is for voice processing, but it can be used for a number of different functions. From what I understand, it’s not compatible for Mac’s that are 10.10 and higher, unfortunately. But I’m sure there is a way to make it work.
The Blue Cat audio plugin comes with a range of different modulation effects, including a 3-band equalizer, a gain-suite, a chorus, phaser, flanger, and a frequency analyzer.
This is an EQ plug-in that is now compatible with almost every DAW, depending on whether you get the professional version or not. It’s styled after the Pultec EQ.
- Amplitube 4(Costs Money)
Amplitube 4 is a great plug-in for many users because they have an official Mesa Boogie Amplifier pack, including the dual rectifier, the triple rectifier, the Mark-III, and the transatlantic TA-30.
It has more features than that, including a cabinet section where you can choose microphone placement and a bunch of other settings. Moreover, Amplitube has worked with a bunch of other companies, including Orange Amplifiers.
You can actually get a free demo version of Amplitube though with the purchase of an iRig HD 2, which you should get anyways (if you’re a guitar/bass player).

- Superior Dummer 2.0(Also Costs Money)
Created by ToonTrack, Superior Drummer has a great reputation for being one of the greatest drumming software. It has over 50 GB of drum kits and samples that you can choose from, and like Amplitube, companies worked with them directly in the creation of the samples.
Also created by u-he in 2005, this is a fairly old plug-in, but is considered as a classic synthesizer that comes with a ton of different presets. It comes with a filter, an oscillator, an envelope, an arpeggiator, and a sequencer.
This is another legit synthesizer plug-in created by Archetype Instruments. It’s fairly simple to use, but can be used for a wide range of effects, including filters and distortion.
Another polyphonic synthesizer plug-in compatible for both PC and Mac. Modeled after an old Roland synth, the settings are adjustable with sliders rather than knobs, which some people prefer.
The SGA1566 is a virtual pre-amp that is used for boosting particular instruments and channels.
EZ Drummer, like Superior Drummer, is also created by Toon Track, but it’s simpler, less expensive (about half as much), and doesn’t come with as many drum-kits and settings.
The Nova-67P is another equalizer plug-in paired with a compressor. With this, you can input a side-chain signal.
This is akin to the Digitech Whammy Pedal, which you can see in the image for this blog post. Nonetheless, you can use this to make pretty bizarre sounds.
Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine is known for using the stomp-box from which this VST takes its inspiration. Essentially, the Pitchproof plug-in is a pitch-shifter and harmonizer.
I actually own the Digitech Whammy Pedal, and obviously, the real analog model is far superior to any form of a plug-in that you can use. It’s a great little piece of equipment for guitar playing. You can probably check it out on Amazon and get it for a good price.
Multiply is a nice little chorus effect that I like to use for guitars, piano, and vocals, primarily. Garageband comes with a chorus effect, but it isn’t quite as good as this one.
The Voxengo Marvel GEQ is a 15-band equalizer that allows you to really take control of the EQ of your track. I actually own an MXR 10-Band EQ, and it’s very similar to this plug-in, albeit, superior.
You can also grab one of those off of Amazon if you’re interested in a legit piece of equipment.
This is, basically, a super powerful and useful compressor that allows you to do more than the compressor that comes with Garageband. It’s pretty cool and worth checking out.
This, like the M-Audio FX Bundle, comes with over 20 effects and processors, 24 to be exact. It’s a fairly old set of plug-ins, but I’m sure it can be quite useful.
I use this one quite a lot whenever I can’t get ahold of my real acoustic and nylon string guitar. It’s superior to the guitars offered in GarageBand, but still, not quite as good as the real thing, of course. For what it is, it works great.
I use this plug-in almost every day, especially the Trap Kit setting it comes with. It comes with over a dozen drum-kits, which makes it pretty handy for hip-hop producers.
What Plug-Ins come with GarageBand?
When you download stock plug-ins in Garageband, it comes with a plethora of useful VST’s, including all of the software instruments.
Software Instruments
Garageband comes with 15 different categories of software instruments: bass, drum kit, electronic drum kit, guitar, mallet, orchestral, percussion, piano, synthesizer, vintage B3 organ, vintage clav, vintage electric piano, vintage mellotron, world, arpeggiator.
Each category has a number of different software instruments within it, especially the arpeggiator, which must have close to 50-70 models.
Plug-ins
In the plug-in settings, there are 12 categories of plug-ins with a ton of different sub-categories:
Amps and Pedals, Delay, Distortion, Dynamics, EQ, Filter, Imaging, Modulation, Pitch, Reverb, Specialized, and Utility are the main categories.
Amps and Pedals – Amp Designer, Bass Amp Designer, Pedalboard.
- The Amp Designer has 26 different Models, 26 Amps, and 26 Cabinets. Garageband’s Amp Designer is actually pretty solid considering Garageband is a free program.
- The Bass Amp Designer has 4 different models, 3 amps, and 8 cabinets.
Pedalboard –The pedalboard comes with 36 different effects. It pretty much has everything you could need for playing guitar, including overdrive, wah, a whammy pedal, delay, chorus, overdrive, and so on and so forth.
Their quality isn’t quite as good as some of the plug-ins that you can download or buy, but they’re sufficient, nonetheless.
Delay – Delay Designer, Echo, Sample Delay, Stereo Delay, and Tape Delay
Distortion – Bitcrusher, Clip Distortion, Distortion, Distortion II, Overdrive, and Phase Distortion.
Dynamics – Compressor, DeEsser, Enveloper, Limiter, Multipressor, and the Noise Gate.
EQ– Channel EQ and Single Band EQ.
Filter – AutoFilter, Filterbank, Fuzz-Wah, and the Spectral Gate.
Imaging – Direction Mixer, and the Stereo Spread.
Modulation – Chorus, Ensemble, Flanger, Microphaser, Modulation Delay, Phaser, Ringshifter, Rotor Cabinet, Scanner Vibrato, Spreader, Tremolo.
Pitcher – Pitch Shifter, Vocal Transformer
Reverb – EnVerb, PlatinumVerb, SilverVerb, Space Designer
Specialized – Exciter and Sub-Bass
Utility – Gain.
Audio Units – This setting has a ton of different dynamics tools, including AUBandpass, AUDelay, AUDistortion, AUDynamicsProcessor, AUFilter, AUGraphicEQ, AUHighShelfFilter, AUHighpass, AULowpass, AULowShelfFilter, AUMatrixReverb, AUMultibandCompressor, AUNBandEQ, AUMultibandCompressor, AUNBandEQ, AUNetSend, AUNewPitch, AUParametricEQ, AUPeakLimiter, AUPitch, AUReverb2, AURogerBeep, AURoundTripAAC, AUSampleDelay.
Where are the Plug-ins in GarageBand?
When you first open the program, Garageband shows you all of the 15 software instruments on the left-hand side, and as I mentioned above, there are a ton of instruments and pre-sets within each category.
The other plug-ins are located in the bottom within the Smart Controls area, including within the plug-ins option as well as within the Amp Designer, Bass Amp Designer, and the Pedalboard.
Whenever you download plug-ins through the way I showed earlier in the article, the plug-ins will often appear in the Audio Units tab.
The plug-ins are in several locations, but it also depends on how you define plug-ins. If we’re talking about the plug-ins that you’ve downloaded, then you’ll find these in the “Audio Units” tab within the Smart Controls plug-in settings.

In today’s tutorial, I’m going to show you how I recently used pitch correction in the manner consistent (at least in sound) with Travis Scott and other hip-hop artists of the day.
Pitch-correction is almost always used in the recording process, and every artist uses it, from metal bands, rock bands, pop singers, and so on and so forth.
Similar to ghost-writers and professional producers/writers working on your favorite artist’s latest record, it’s just a part of the business and it’s a part of how the game is played at a high level.
Without further ado…
How To Use Auto-Tune (Pitch Correction) In Garageband.
First things first.
You need to know the key signature of the music. This should be the first step you make.
If you want to know the key signature of the song, I just find the tonal center of the music, and then I play the notes of that scale.
For instance, when I jammed along to Dave East’s “Type Of Time” recently, I knew it was in the key of C Minor (relative major: Eb Major).
I figured it out, just by searching around on my guitar for the note on which the entire song is built, and then I played the natural minor scale up from the root note, carefully listening for each note to hear any dissonances.
If you don’t know anything about major or minor scales, I suggest checking out MusicTheory.net, as they have great tutorials for beginners to music theory. Also, Mark Sarnecki’s book, which I wrote about here.
You can also use the tool, TuneBat.com.
TuneBat is a pretty good resource for quickly finding the key signature of a song. They have quite a bit in there.
Personally, I like figuring it out for myself that way I don’t have to depend on the software, however, if you’re only a music producer rather than a musician, sight-reading or improvising skills really aren’t that important.

1) Open a new project/already existing project.
2) Hit (Command + Option + A) to bring up an Audio track.
3) You’ll see down in the Smart Controls the way the Audio looks in wave format, in addition to a few different settings including, “Limit to Key,” and “Enable Flex.”

4) From here, what you want to do is hit the “Enable Flex” and “Limit Key” check-boxes to ensure that when you record some vocals or other music, the pitch correction tool will come in keep everything in the key.
5) At this point, I’m sure you’re already familiar with the key signature option at the top center of the DAW, but for the sake of clarification, I’ll speak of it anyway.
Just go up to the top-center where it displays the beats per minute, measure, time signature, and the tempo. You can adjust the key signature from there.
6) Now, if you want to make auto-tune work in the style of, say, for example, T-Pain, you’re going to need to know the key signature of the track in which to sing.
7) Depending on how much auto-tune you want to use, you can adjust the pitch correction on a 1-100 scale within the Smart Controls.
If you put it all the way to 100, that’s obviously the most amount of pitch-correction you can use.
8) The next step is to begin recording your vocals, and then listen to how the pitch correction tool has changed the way your vocals sound.
In the Instagram post below, you can see what it sounds like without pitch correction and with the pitch-correction all the way up to 100.
The first thing that you hear is the out-of-key version of “Stargazing” from Travis Scott.
You’ll notice when I say the word, “Stargazing,” it sounds out of key. But then after I adjust the pitch the correction to 100 it starts to sound good.

In conclusion, the steps I laid out above is how you pitch-correct a vocal track. However, if you want to use auto-tune as a creative tool in the style of Travis Scott, then there are additional details.
It’s worth mentioning that between 65 and 75 is the best range for the pitch correction tool if you’re just trying to correct those imperfections.
Also, it’s best to give the best singing performance possible, because the pitch correction tool works at its most optimal when the notes are only slightly off.
If you just sing wildly out of tune, the benefit of using the pitch correction software is lost. You can try it for yourself some time to see what I mean.
How To Use Auto-Tune Like Travis Scott

For this, it’s pretty much the same thing as the steps listed above, but we have to add a few more effects, including delay, reverb, and a bit of compression as well, actually, probably a lot.
For the sake of clarity, I’ll run through these steps once again.
1) Bring up your audio track using the (Command + Option + A) function.
2) Click on the Audio Region.
3) Click on Track.
4) Check both boxes, “Limit to Key,” as well as “Enable Flex.”
5) Hit Record on your Audio Track, and then record yourself singing whatever it is that you want to sing.
If I were you, I would make sure that you have the “Feedback Protection” box clicked, just in case.
Also, if you’re going to use your computer’s built-in microphone, you’ll have to plug headphones in due to the fact the microphone and built-in speakers are too close to each other.
If you plan on actually making legitimate vocals, obviously, it’d be a much better option to use a good microphone. From what I understand, Shure is kind of like the industry standard.

6) Turn the pitch-correction all the way up to 100 that way it’s working as much as possible.
7) Go into your Plug-ins, and select the options, Compressor, Platinum Verb within the Reverb options, the Stereo Delay, as well as the Channel EQ
8) First, go into your EQ, and EQ the audio track so it looks like the image I’ve laid out below.
You can see that the Lows have been boosted considerably, as well as the highs, and then the mids are cut out almost completely.
9) Then, go into your Compressor and set it at the settings you can see below in the image.
10) For the Platinum Verb, I just keep it at the default setting.
11) Now that you have your final track, you can see that it kind of has that Washed out with Reverb/Robot style which is Travis Scott’s style. I don’t mean that derisively, those are just the mannerisms that come to mind.
12) For the next step, you want to copy and paste your audio track into two new duplicate tracks, however, you’ll pan the one to the left and one to the right using the pan buttons that look like this.
13) After this, make sure you turn off the Delay off the two duplicate tracks because otherwise, there will be too much of it.
Effects like Reverb and Delay kind of add up on top of each other, so make sure to not over-use these features.
How To Use Auto-Tune (Pitch Correction) In iOS
Setting up pitch correction and auto-tune in iOS isn’t much different from how you’d do it on the Mac.
Without further ado.
1) The first thing you want to do, is hit the option, “+” on the top right-hand side of the screen when you first open up Garageband iOS.
2) Select the option, “Audio Recorder.” 2
3) Now, you’ll come to a little dial in the center of the screen that kind of looks like a children’s toy. Choose the Golden Microphone option titled, “Extreme Tuning.”
4) From there, go into the drop-down menu on the top-left hand of the screen and click on the “Extreme Tuning” icon.
5) Then, click on the setting that says, “Vocals.”
6) Choose the option “Lead Vocals” from there.
7) We now have five dials from which to choose, Tone, Pitch Control, Compressor, Drive, and Vocal Hall.

8) You can adjust the compressor up or down, depending on how much you want to equalize the sound.
9) From here, as I mentioned in the tutorial above, you need to figure out the key signature of your song. Considering the fact it’s the song you’ve likely written, you’ll know what the key is.
10) If you need to adjust the Key Signature, click on the icon that looks a gear, then choose “Song Settings.” From there, you can see where it gives Tempo and Key Signature options.

***Having the proper key signature set up is an important detail because it gives the pitch correction software a standard by which to measure and adjust.
If you have the wrong Key Signature, auto-tune won’t work properly because the tool will adjust the wrong notes to the wrong pitch.
***There’s also an Application that you can download called, “Voloco,” which acts as a harmonizer and pitch correction tool. I don’t think it’s that necessary frankly, but you can try that out.
